Akshara's Column: I am overjoyed to name my son Naksh

It is our family ritual that the bua gives a name to the baby. But I had also thought of a name for our baby. Ever since this little life started to grow inside me, I was thinking about giving him a special name. I don't feel that it is wrong if a mother wishes to name her child, after all she is an integral part of her child's life and hence she too has a right to give her suggestion. And if changing a small custom will bring happiness, it should not be made into an issue.

Sometimes people compare little children and often talk about their complexion, but it is not right to do so, as each child is special and is considered God's gift, hence things like complexion, looks etc should not be questioned. I know that Gayatri ma sometimes gets over protective about her grandson as he is her first grandchild. Even his nana-nani wish to spend time with him. His nani has kept a cute nickname, chickoo for him. Gayatri ma got a little anxious when little Ananya accidentally hurt our son and he began crying. She asked me to be more careful, but I know that she did not mean to hurt anyone's feelings.

Friends and family had come to join us and celebrate with us. There was singing and dancing and everybody gave their blessings to our son. People had also brought gifts for the baby, but we must realise that more than gifts, their good wishes are what matters the most. During the ceremony, Nandini and the rest of the family asked me to name the baby and I was happy to name our bundle of joy, Naksh. It is a special name as it is the combination of Naitik and my name.
