Social Media voices its support for #AgingParents

India is looked upon as a nation that truly reveres and respects its elders. It is probably the only country in the world where we always touch our elder's feet and seek blessings from them. The respectful attitude towards elders and the practice of more than one generation living together is considered as the hallmark of Indian culture. But in reality, today countless old people are shunned by their children, left penniless and homeless and have to depend on charity for a living.

In the latest episode of Satyamev Jayate, Aamir Khan revealed the disturbing picture of the condition of elderly people in India. “Why do old parents become a burden for many?” is the question that he was trying to seek an answer for. One of the guests on the show, Himanshu Rath, said that older people should be aware of the pitfalls of life, and should also stand firm against any pressure they may face at home. He was also of the opinion that no wealth should be given to the children, in the parents’ own interest, no matter what the emotional blackmail.  The show went on to portray stories and experiences of several other guests and explored possible avenues to address the issues.

Like every other week, this week’s topic also generated a lot of buzz on the social media circuit.  The hashtag #AgingParents was trending nationally just 20 minutes into the show and it continued in top trends for the rest of the day.

Some of the top retweets are as follows:

Isha Ganeriwal (‏@IshaSG) - Whatever I am today is because of My Parents..They spent thr youth on me & now I shud spend mine on them..Love them..!! ?#AgingParents?? ?#SMJ??

Kushal Sanghvi (‏@kushalsanghvi) - #Agingparents would never age if they had children n a support system that never made them age #Satyamevajayate

Sarodia (‏@Saro_dia) - Parents hold your hand when you are a kid, they support you always when they are old it's time for you to become their support ?#agingparents?

Krishna Khanna ‏(@krishnakhanna27) - A child can never gain respect from anyone in the world if they are not respecting their own parent. #AgingParents

Sharmistha Thackeray ‏(@Sharmishtha_T) - “Parents who are afraid to put their foot down usually have children who step on their toes” #AgingParents #SMJ

What is ironically called as “golden years” has turned out to be the most difficult phase of life for many elderly people in our country. All that they want from us is our love and support. Is it really that difficult to fulfil?  Think about it and let us know what you think by being a part of the #SatyamevJayate conversation @smjindia. Tune-in to Satyamev Jayate at 11AM on STAR Plus every Sunday.

Sadly this is not the case all over the world. I am a Hindu and came to UK in my teens. I have a care home that look after elderly people and although they are well looked after, they long to see their children. Only time the children are interested is when they have passed away and only want to know if the parent have left a Will. I live on my own and have two grown up children but I rarely see them. I do get worried on old age but luckily in this country we have good support from the social se
