But if you thought that the show is just about cooking let’s tell you that it would involve a lot of drama and action too. Viewers will get to see the contestants getting very emotional with tears rolling down their cheeks (don’t blame the onions for it). The event announcing the launch commenced with a special performance choreographed for the show by Akshay Kumar. Akshay confessed that the show has got him back to his roots. To those uninitiated, the superstar started as a chef and acting happened to him much later. A true Punjabi, he loves eating and cooking.
We spoke to the superstar to find out what prompted him to take up the show and his plans for his birthday today.
Apart from the show taking you back to your roots, what are the other reasons that prompted you to take up this show?
The very fact that the show is bringing me back to my roots is big enough a reason for me to do this show. If I have to say the same thing in Hindi then “Yeh show ne mujhe meri aukat dikha dee (The show has shown me my true self).
What is Akshay’s specialty?
Well I have cooked so many things but today I have made chicken green Thai curry for all of you. I hope you all like it as I have tried my best to make it as tasty as possible.
How challenging is the show for you?
It is indeed challenging for me and the contestants alike. The contestants have cried on the show. I want to give housewives of the country a platform to showcase their potential and talent. They are the unsung heroes of any family.
When did you inculcate interest in cooking and how did you become a chef?
I developed an interest in cooking some 28 years ago. I had gone to Thailand to get trained in martial arts and I landed up with a job at a restaurant. I started enjoying it eventually. Finally, I got into acting.
Will you like to share any kitchen secret with us?
Keep your kitchen clean which is essential and wash your vegetables properly.
Who is the master chef of your life?
My grandmother is my master chef.
When a wife fights with her husband, she cooks his favourite dish. What do you do when you upset your wife Twinkle?Why is it important to cook for your wife only to pacify her after you have has a fight, why can’t you cook otherwise? I like to make different kind of paranthas (stuffed chapattis) for her.
How are you going to draw male viewers to this show, since cookery shows generally attract women?
This is not just a cookery show as it is also about great drama and good food.
But being a male superstar you will garner more viewership from the fairer sex?
Who said that? Please don’t divide the viewership and confuse the readers.
Were those days when you started as a chef more difficult than judging this show?
That was the most easiest job during that time.
Seeing you one can’t believe that you are a foodie. What do you do to remain fit?
Its very simple. I eat a lot but I don’t eat post 7 in the evening. If you follow this basic rule you will remain fit.
There is a cookery show on a rival channel. How different is your show from it?
I haven’t seen the show at all so I can’t comment. I have done my work and tried to give my best to it.
From hosting Khatron Ke Khiladi to Master Chef now what have you enjoyed the most?
Food and stunts have been an integral part of my life and its impossible for me to prefer one over the other. I have enjoyed both.
It’s your birthday today. Are you planning to cook anything special for your family for the occasion?
I don’t cook on my birthday. I will go to one of my favourite restaurants for dinner. I work outside so that I don't have to do a job back home (laughs).
