Set in the beautiful alleys of Old Delhi, Sasural Genda Phool is the story of two unlikely characters: Rich, indulged Suhana, used to getting her own way every time, and the middle class Ishaan Kashyap, who loves his family and wouldn’t consider living anywhere else but with his large joint family.

Two strangers bound together by marriage. They share immense love and affection. But not without some teething troubles, as Suhana tries to grapple with a lifestyle and situation she has never been used to!

You have seen the spoilt girl. You have seen her stubbornness, admittedly mistaking it for arrogance.

Now, for the first time, Suhana speaks her mind, dear readers. In the first of a heartfelt, honest series, Suhana talks about the completely new set of people she has to live with, after marriage. And what she has learnt from them! Over to Suhana:

WHEN I married Ishaan, I was very upset with my dad for choosing him and his family. But now, over time, I believe Dad was right.

Ishaan’s family is huge. But every single one of them share an invisible but strong bond. For example, Ishaan and his brothers. So very talkative, that I sometimes cannot hear myself think around them! And they so love irritating me and getting me heckled up. But you know what? I can feel the love all around this big house!

What can I say about my mother-in-law? She is just so very sweet and lovable. If I am restless, she too gets very restless! I remember, it was tremendously hot one day and I was at the balcony to get some fresh air. My mother-in-law spotted me alone, and asked me why I was standing there. Perhaps it was the pangs of being away from my home where I lacked for nothing, or perhaps it was irritation, but I told her the reason why. Imagine my surprise, dear reader when, the very next day, there was a huge surprise waiting for me. An air-conditioner was installed in my room! And all because of my thoughtful mother-in-law. You cannot imagine how happy she made me!

You know, I have a confession. I recently made rotis at home. And Ishaan loved them. He was so appreciative of my gesture.

And most important, I want to share something. I am so drawn to Badimaa. I cannot explain why. Perhaps it is because I can see my mother in her. She is always so calm and composed. She told me some hard facts about life so lovingly and simply. I can’t help but imagine her as my mother.

Oh, and how can I forget the cutest couple of the house, Dadima and Dadaji? They are both darlings! You know something? As every day goes by, I realise how very lucky Ishaan is.

Yes, I am beginning to adjust to this huge, sweet family. My dad always gave us what we wanted, but he was never able to give me a mother’s care and affection.

Now, this new family that I have acquired has taught me family values. I have learnt that family comes first. And the loving bonds that you forge with your family are what stand the test of time.

I have to go now. Time for me to make rotis again! But I’ll leave you with a promise – I’ll be back again soon to speak with you, dear readers.

I’d love to hear from you. What you think, what you feel, and I would be obliged if you had any advice to offer me on how to be a good daughter-in-law! Please write to me at suhana@starplus.in. I waill wait to hear from you!

Stay tuned, dear readers, to Suhana’s corner next week, as she draws you more into her world! For any advice and suggestions, please write to suhana@starplus.in. Don’t forget to write your name, age and the city where you live in.
